2025 Trap Team State Accomplishments
Alexandria, Minnesota has a wonderful facility for hosting the MN Clay Target League State Trap tournament where everyone that registers for the league gets to participate in 1 of 3 categories: Novice, JV or Varsity. The state tournament is hosted over 9 days beginning June 9th and concluding on June 17th this season. Sunshine, wind or rain, the athletes shoot in squads of up to 5, shooting 5 clays at each of the 5 stations. Athletes shoot 50 clays targets in sets of 25 before rotating off the stands to make way for the next squad. Trap teams shoot on one of the assigned or specific day according to the size of your team of athletes. State officials will suspend shooting if the weather displays lightning and/or thunder. Once the inclement weather passes, clay target shooting resumes.
Colleges and universities, and vendors related to any aspect of ammunition, eye/ear protection, firearms, apparel, bird vendors, state wildlife officials, leather works and food vendors are present during the state clay target shoot to educate the adult and youth present. The layout is impressive. A plethora of things to enjoy between shooting sessions.
27/30 Viking athletes were able to register for the state meet and participate for Pelican Rapids. A number of parents were able to come to the meet, provide a second canopy of cover and cheer on the team! We have wonderful parents for our Viking team! Volunteer coaches Pam and Jesse Rockstead, Faron Pederson, Jim Fitzgerald, Gary Kowalski, Pete Waller and Sheri Meester thoroughly enjoyed watching many of the athletes shine despite very wet shooting conditions for the second round of 50 clays. The coaches came prepared to support all athletes, whether it was encouragement, a quick bit of advice, shell replacement or firearm repair during the state shoot. Other volunteer coaches not able to make the tournament were Austin Fitzgerald, Les Pierce, Patty and David Johnson and Tom Stoe. Tom also assists coaching in the Devils Lake area.
