We are here to help your child succeed throughout their educational experience at Pelican Rapids Schools.

Viking Student Success K-6

This free, fun after-school program is offered to students in grades K-6 who need increased support in reading and math. The VSS licensed teachers work with the individual learning styles of the students to help with essential learning outcomes (ELOs). There are also opportunities for enrichment, movement and engagement in activities to build additional skills. There are summer and after-school sessions. If interested, please contact your child's teacher to see if this is a good option for your child.

After-school hours - usually starts in October of each year

Tuesday - Thursday from 3:05-5:15pm
An after-school snack is provided

Registration is required. Please contact your child's teacher for more information.

Students need a teacher, staff, or parent referral/application for this Targeted Services program, administered by the Pelican Rapids Schools Area Learning Center.

Viking Student Success 7-12

Credit Recovery Program 9-12

This program is available to students in grades 9-12 who are off-track for graduation and are working towards completing their graduation requirements. There is a daytime 'school within a school' option as well as a summer session. Graduating with their peers is the overall goal of this program.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Students who speak more than one language are in English Language Learners (ELL) class.

They study English in four areas:

listening
speaking
reading
writing

Each year they take the ACCESS test which assesses English language proficiency. It’s very difficult and similar to the MCA’s except there are 4 separate tests.

Proficient students graduate from ELL class

Students who have an overall proficiency score of 4.5 or higher plus a 3.5 in at least 3 of the 4 domains are considered proficient in English and no longer require ELL classes. Proficient students graduate from ELL class.

Special Education

Special education is a broad category that identifies the academic, physical, cognitive, and social-emotional instruction offered to children with one or more disabilities. Pelican Rapids Public Schools Special Education programs and services adapt content, teaching methodology, and instruction delivery to meet the needs of each student. Services are available to students identified with one or more of the following disabling conditions:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Deaf & Hard of Hearing
Deaf-Blind
Developmental Cognitive Disability (DCD)
Developmental Delay (DD)
Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (EBD)
Other Health Disabilities (OHD)

Visual Impaired

Our licensed special education teachers work with classroom teachers and related service providers to ensure that each child receives a free and appropriate public education. A child's team includes a licensed teacher, administrator, and other support staff to meet the individual needs of the child. Support staff may include Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Social Workers, and paraprofessionals.

In compliance with Federal and State law, Pelican Rapids Public Schools identifies and evaluates all students in its jurisdiction, ages 3 through 21 needing special education services. The district regularly conducts “child find” activities, accepting referrals from classroom teachers, parents, physicians, and outside agencies. If you believe your child may have any of the disabling conditions listed above, please contact Viking Elementary or Pelican Rapids High School for more information about the referral process.

Evaluation Process

Pre-referral: Student is referred to special education team after 2-3 interventions have been conducted over a 6-8 week period with little or no growth
Evaluation: Team develops a comprehensive plan
IEP Development: If eligible, an Invidual Education Plan (IEP) is created for the student

Public Service Announcement 6-17-22

The primary purpose of the Fergus Falls Area Special Education Cooperative is to provide a free, appropriate, and comprehensive education for all students with disabilities, ages 0 to 21. If you are aware of any child that may be in need of special education services, they may contact their local school district principal and/or the director of special education to consider possible evaluation to determine their needs for special education.
