The Pelican Rapids High School Lady Vikings softball team enter the 2018 campaign with several experienced seniors –plus plenty of girls who know how to pitch.
Following is a season preview, from Head Coach Dan Beck, who is entering his third season.
Assistant Coaches: Sarah Davis, Shawn Gravalin, Chelsea VanRaden
Conference: Heart O’ Lakes
Last Year’s record and finish: (2-10) 6th
Taylor Berndt, senior, pitcher-catcher. Taylor was All-Conference last year and is a very strong player, both as a pitcher and a hitter. She will be a difference-maker for us once again this Spring. Last year, Taylor hit over .450 with 2 HRs, 6 2Bs, & 16 RBIs. Taylor is committed to playing Softball & Volleyball at M-State in Fergus Falls.
Shelby Schermerhorn, senior, pitcher-catcher. Shelby was All-HOL Honorable-Mention last Spring, and she is the emotional leader of our team. She will spend a lot of time pitching for us, and she hit over .400 last year as well. Shelby is committed to playing Softball at U-M-Morris.
Sarah Thompson, JR (P/IF). Sarah was All-HOL Honorable-Mention last Spring and brings a bevy of different skills to our team. As a sophomore, Sarah hit over .450 with 29 hits (8 2Bs & 2 3Bs). Sarah has the ability to play any position on the field.
Grace Peterson, JR, (P/OF). Grace passed her first varsity season tests with flying colors. She spent the bulk of her Sophomore year batting lead-off and playing Left Field. This year, she will most likely shift over to Center Field. She has good speed and has the ability to put pressure on defenses in a lot of different ways.
Greta Tollefson, FR, (P/C);
Holly Bergquist, FR, (P/C);
Allie Haiby, FR, (P/IF);
Vanassa Booth, FR, (P/OF);

Experience, attitude, and effort.
What does the team need to improve on:
Not letting one mistake lead to another.
Expectations for the year:
Favorites for the Conference and Section: The HOL brings back a lot of strong players on a yearly basis. Hawley, DGF, and Perham return a vast amount of experienced players.
In Section 6A, New York Mills (2017 State Champions) will be the odds-on favorite to return to the 2018 State Tournament.
